Always on Error ( Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53].) when connecting to Database

This is an error is due to Qlik not being able to connect to the SQL server.

Has this ever worked or do other Qlik apps connect to this server OK? 
Is the SQL server name & instance correct?
Are the ports used by SQL blocked by your firewall, usually port 1443?
Is named pipes configured on your SQL Server?

The error [Microsoft][SQL Server Native Client 11.0]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [53]  is returned in Qlik logs as that is what the product is receiving from the source. So this is not a Qlik error, per se.  As Collin stated, Qlik cannot connect to the SQL server.
