Tools for creating icons

Hi all,

To enhance the QlikView end-user experience I make a lot of use of icons. Most of the time I gather them by Google or sites like iconmonstr or DryIcons and edit them (if needed) with Gimp. I was wondering what tools are there around to create icons from scratch?
