Java 8 is currently the recommended Java version for all Talend products and modules since v6.0. Although you can still use Java 7, Java 8 is the only version of Java that is officially supported from Talend v6.0 onwards, due to the end of Oracle support for Java 7.
Prior to v6.0, the recommended Java version was Java 7.
But which is the max version nr that can run on java7.
I have lots of ODBC based things and nothing of that runs on Java8 - and dont feel like changing all to native drivers, as that means to implement also SSO authentications, etc. that is cumbersome without admin rights to Windows.
Lets put it this way. What is the current Talend version you are using? Or are you going to use Talend now with latest version?
Coming to the authentication mechanism, its a different topic altogether but in short newer versions of softwares have better authentication mechanism, whether its Talend or DBs etc. Also when you are using native drivers, your data throughput also increases substantially. So I would recommend to move to newer versions to be inline with rest of the world.
