General Question about a formula

I don't understand the formula (attachment) that our vendor created and using. Part of the formula is not highlighted. I don't understand what it does. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do you mean the set analysis?

the formula does a union (the + symbol) of 2 sets

1- Entry date <= Enddate (possibly a variable) and has no exit date

2- Entry date <= Enddate and Exit date >= Startdate (another variable)

Basically with these 2 set analysis is combined and a count distinct is performed

see below for more on set analysis
