Migration of Qlik Sense June 2020 to May 2023 (last patch) on a new architecture

Hello,

i need to perform a Qlik Sense migration from June 2020 release (on windows server 2012 R2) with PostgreSQL 9.6 on standalone server, TO Qlik Sense May 2023 (last patch) on new Windows Server instance. So i will have a new PostgreSQl Server and new Qlik Sense nodes for my new architecture.

i plan to follow these different steps :

1/ Install a new Qlik Sense June 2020 version on my new architecture with PostgreSQl 9.6 in order to be able to restore the production database from a backup.

2/ Restore the backup and copy all Apps in the new File share

3/ Ckeck if the installation is successful

4/ Upgrade directly Qlik Sense June 2020 to May 2023 (including an upgrade of PostgreSQL 9.6 to 14.8 following this procedure : https://community.qlik.com/t5/Official-Support-Articles/Qlik-Sense-Enterprise-on-Windows-How-To-Upgr...

but i don't know if this procedure will work if my initial version of PostgreSQL is 9.6 ?

5/ Check if the new central node with May 2023 works and all my Qlik Sense Apps are available on my new architecture.

Can you validate the different steps and tell me which is the best way to upgrade my standalone PostgreSQl server 9.6 to 14.8 ?

Thanks a lot,

Emmanuel

I've updated a couple of servers lately in a similar fashion. From 2021 versions to May 2023.
The move to new server you need the exact same versions of Sense and PostgreSQL on the new server as the old server.
When on the new server I would recommend updating it year by year.
I usually go to the Feb-version next year and verify it is working between updates.
Don't know if Feb-version is better than any other version, historically most feature updates have been in early summer and thus Feb-version should be the most stable one but with SaaS driving features it is more spread out during the year.
You don't need patches for the intermediate version as those are replaced anyway with the next version.
Arriving at May 2023 you need to do the PostgreSQL update on the IR version thus wait with patches until after that.
It is possible to run May 2023 with PostgreSQL v9.6, the last version this is possible.
You will have a warning in QMC that PostgreSQL is running unsopprted version but it will work.

Ok so the best way is to upgrade gradually through 1 release each year (for example May 2021, May 2022 and finally May 2023).

Is there a particular procedure that could help me to upgrade Postgresql from version 9.6 to version 14.8? i just found this one but i don't know if i can apply it for a migration 9.6 to 14.8 ?

My practice is to update year by year, from experience that works the best.
Upgrading PostgreSQL Qlik has released a tool for that, the "Qlik PostgreSQL Installer".
Recommend you update Sense to May 2023 IR and then use this tool before proceeding further.
Note that backups and snapshots are always good to have if something goes wrong.

Qlik PostgreSQL Installer does not work on a standalone installation of PostgreSQL. i have a dedicated PostgreSQl Server,  so i think i cannot use it in my situation.

Okay, did not recollect all you have posted above.
Yes then you have to handle the update of PostgreSQL separately on your own,
possibly with the help of the document you referenced.
