Upgrading from Qlik Sense Sep 2020 on-premise to latest version

Hi all,

I would appreciate some guidance regarding the upgrade path for Qlik Sense on-premise Sep 2020 edition on a Windows 2019 dedicated server. I have been told that this is a multi-stage upgrade (i.e. not a direct upgrade) so any assistance would be greatly appreciated as the client would like to make use of the latest features that more recent editions now have.
Thanks in advance

Hi @alexis The documentation below provides details on major changes introduced in Qlik Sense version, please refer to the considerations section and plan the upgrade accordingly.

Hi @Chetan_MN
Thanks for your replies.
As an alternative to the multi-stage upgrade path that the documentation and the discussion cover, would it be possible for us to do a completely new installation?
We have a number of Qlik Sense applications that we can export (along with QVD files etc), do a fresh installation on that server or even a new server (the client has a spare, better specified server) and then we import the QS applications, recreate our data connectors, user permissions, governance etc on the new installation.
Am I missing something?
Would the license LIF information work on the new installation - do we need to do something to uninistall one installation before (re)creating a new one?

Regards
Alexis

Hi @alexis It is not advised to do a new installation and import apps, create data connections etc... as you may miss many private user objects bookmarks may not be available, this is not proven to work. My recommendation is to go with the incremental upgrade considering the major changes included in the Qlik Sense releases.

I am not normally a supporter of taking shortcuts but our Sep 2020 version will require SIX upgrades each involving backups of data, certificates etc as well as upgrades of .NET and PostgreSQL (9.6 ->12.5 ->14.8) etc... that sounds like a very complex and time consuming process. At least with a fresh installation it will have all the latest dependent compaonents (like PostgreSQL) and will be done in one step.

Our 1-node configuration involves less than 10 users and 3-4 applications all of which we know intimately and things like bookmarks or user-defined objects/sheets etc can easily be recreated. Additionally, we are not using any 3rd party objects that have been known to cause compatibility issues between Qlik Sense versions.

Has anybody who has done a multi-stage upgrade anything to comment or add? I would appreciate any feedback from people who have actually carried out this process or who may wish to add any other traps that I have not considered.

Thanks again for any input
