Power Tools - Shared File Viewer

There are bookmarks in the file with $LASTKNOWNSTATE, can anyone enlighten me when these get created and how they are used?

There is an option available in QV11 and QV10 SR5 (not yet released) to expire temporary bookmarks. Haven't tested yet to see if it deletes the session recovery bookmarks.

There is an article in the Knowledge Base titled "Deleting Temp Bookmarks.pdf" that explains the option.

These are used for session recovery.

The issue seems to be they hang around indefinately, is there a setting that tells the server when to purge them?

The issue is the .shared file keeps growing. The $LASTKNOWNSTATE records do not seem to be reset with a new session.

Please excuse the brevity of this email, it was sent from my telephone.

To enable the deletion of temporary bookmarks, a setting needs to be activated in QlikView Server. Its value is a timeout value indicating how many days each temporary bookmark will be kept from its time of creation.

This setting is available in the following versions:
  • QlikView Server 10 SR5 and later
  • QlikView Server 11 SR1 and later
To enable this setting, do the following:
  1. In the Windows Services Management console, stop the QlikView Server service (QVS.exe)
  2. Locate the Settings.ini configuration file for QlikView Server. It is by default located in the application data folders for QlikView, which can be either of the following two locations:
    1. Windows Server 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\QlikTech\QlikViewServer
    2. Windows Server 2008: C:\ProgramData\QlikTech\QlikViewServer
  3. Open the Settings.ini file in a text editor
  4. Located the node [Settings 7] in the file. Directly under that, add the following row, where N is the timeout value (integer; days before bookmark is deleted): ServerTempBookmarkDayTimeout=N
  5. Save and close the Settings.ini file
  6. In the Windows Services Management console, start the QlikView Server service (QVS.exe)
Note: Removing temporary bookmarks from the .shared file will not decrease the size of the .shared file. This is by design and a consequence of its binary format. To shrink/defrag .shared files, please visit QlikView QlikCommunity (http://www.qlik.com) and look into the Power Tools for QlikView suite and the tool Shared File Viewer.

Hi Bill,

Thanks a lot for this info. I have a question - if the setting ServerTempBookmarkDayTimeout=N is enabled on server, will .shared file size get reduced by server after N days or will it remain same?

Thanks,

Anosh

HI,

No, according to the notes:

Note: Removing temporary bookmarks from the .shared file will not decrease the size of the .shared file. This is by design and a consequence of its binary format.
