Err Creating Metadata from Excel, csv and utf8 encoded files on DI 6.1

The issue also affected me trying to create metadata from an xml file
When I run through the metadata excel wizard and select either a Office 2013 excel file (based off an xml file), a csv export of the excel file or the csv saved using notepad and selecting utf8 encoding when saving I get the error below
During the wizard the file contents are shown when I initially select the file but when I go to preview the contents I get the error marked Error 2
When I try to see the installation history dialog I get error 1 as shown in the attached screen shot
Error 1

An internal error occurred during: "Fetching Elements".

The xml file was originally created on a mac but copies over the network to windows before importing into Excel 2013 on windows and from there creating the csv files

Using Rapidminer 5 I can read the csv and excel file contents so it doesn't appear to be the file itself

Any suggestions how I can get the data into Talend DI

I think it was down to me not using Java 8 JDK as when I installed it and configured Talend to use it over the other java version on my system  I was able to read the Excel correctly. Prior to this I was also getting errors when trying to read from MySQL database but no errors when I started up Talend or designed a job

The error listed as Error 1 still occurs but at least now I can read files and data

:-(
There is a metter to test good configuration of Talend on the machine?
Thanks for all help
