Migrating Qlik Sense to New Server

Hi,

We need to migrate Qlik Sense Enterprise (May 2025) from Server 2012 R2 to Server 2025.

I found the support articles that have detailed instructions but couple of questions.

1. When I install Qlik Sense May 2025 to new server can I use the same licence temporarily on the new and old server before we shut down the old server?

2. When I do the backup of Qlik Sense on the old server I understood it does backup of everything (repository database, Qlik Share folder, QMC settings etc). Is that correct?

Yes, Qlik Sense May 2025 allows a temporary license transfer during migration, but check with Qlik Support for specific terms. The backup process includes the repository database, Qlik Share folder, QMC settings, and more. 1. No, You cannot use the same license on two servers concurrently.

2. Things to watch out for, if you are migrating to server with new hostname, there are addtional steps.

The repository backups will contain all the configuration data, tasks, reloads, app information, qlik share folder links, but wont contain the actual Apps and Qvds itself. You will need to migrate those manually.

But in theory if you copied those to same structure on new sever, when restoring the reposittory backups, it should then work.

1. I recommend checking with your representative at Qlik about that. There has to be some grace period in this scenario. I believe it’s allowed to use the same test license for test environments but I don’t think it’s the case for prod environment licenses. Your Qlik rep should know for sure.

2. You will have to back up each of the components individually. And as SW mentioned, there are a handful of steps you’ll need to follow when recovering a QS server on a different machine. I put together couple of videos and articles walking through exactly what to backup and the what to recover when recovering or migrating a QS server. The links are below.

It depends on the license type you are using, using LEF you can only run one site.

But you can use the same SLK on as many Qlik Sense sites as you want. Only the license allocations are counted. If the sites have different users, all user from all sites will show up. But in your case the users should be the same so everything should be assigned already.

@Maria_Halley I've seen that documentation before. It's very confusing. The documentation uses several different terms when referring to licenses. Terms used in the documentation are:

1. Unified license
2. Signed key
3. Signed license key (same as signed key?)
4. Serial and control number
5. Core-based license
6. User-based license
7. Capacity-based license
8. Consumption-based license
9. Subscription-based license
10. Token license
11. Professional User license
12. Analyzer User license
13. Perpetual license
14. Analyzer Capacity access (is access pass same as license?)
15. User access pass
16. Login access pass

It feels like whoever wrote that documentation took on some sort of a bet to see how many different license terms he or she can use in a single documentation. I am impressed by how many terms they were able to squeeze into a single documentation, but obviously that made the documentation a giant mess.

Do you have any insights that you can share with us to help us make sense out of how many server license variations there actually are and which ones can be used to migrate Qlik Sense to a new server without taking original server offline?

I guess it would be best to swap hostname and IP then.

-Backup everything from the old server
-End and disable all qlik services
-Change hostname and IP

Then on the new server give it the same hostname and IP that was on the old server, install Qlik Sense etc..

You can check in the license manager - Site license in the QMC. If you are using Signed License Key (SLK) It will say signed license.

If you are using SLK you can run several servers at the same time.
