Full date rolled up to a year?

I have one field in my data that is all dates (MM/DD/YYYY).  I'd like to condense this down to just years so that people can search for everything that happened in a given year.  I know that I can change the number format to just YYYY, but when I do that it still differentiates between the different dates in my search boxes while still showing them as the same value.

09/20/2012 shows as 2012

04/14/2012 shows as 2012

12/31/2012 shows as 2012

etc, etc

So when I search for 2012 in a search box, I get a bunch of values returned that display 2012, but aren't rolled up.  Is there any way I can roll up my dates by year without editing the underlying data?  Thanks!
