Currently, when a user has a chart with a lot of distinct values and would like to search in that dimension for a particular value he/she has to either create a filter pane or use the global search.

I think that a search/filter should be available for any dimension (and possibly also measure) that is currently displayed in any chart. This will result in the use of fewer filter panes (which can take a large portion of the screen in apps with 50+ fields) and more visual objects and so it will increase associative experience.
