Improving Governance / Monitoring Apps in Sense (Operations Monitor, License Monitor)

Calling all Qlik Sense user, admins, and experts -

As the developer of the Monitoring apps (Operations Monitor and License Monitor), I am continually seeking insightful feedback and input from the field. I want the apps to provide the most value possible, so I ask your help.

For all who have installed and used Qlik Sense - specifically the QMC - what is your impression of the Monitoring (aka Governance) apps? Do you use them? If so, why? What is valuable to you?

What is missing?

What is unclear?

Anything unhelpful that could be cleaned up?

If you do not use them, why not?

I appreciate your time and thought!

Thanks! Gracias! Obrigado! Tack!

Tyler

Hello Tyler,

I think it is great that you are looking for feedback from the community .  We recently installed QS (1.1 then 2.0), and as with any QS app, there is a learning curve to understand what data it is showing.  Here is some feedback, which you can take or leave:

Questions I'd have, but can't seem to answer:

If our users continue to log in at the same rate...will we run out of licenses?

For each token, can I see who used each hour block?

For quarantined tokens, when will they be released for use again?

Maybe they should be split up a little more, i.e. the License Monitor has "API Call" and "Log" sheets, which as a user conceptually belong somewhere else.  I wouldn't necessarily know to open up License Monitor if I wanted to review the Logs.  Or API calls should be in Operations Monitor.

Other Monitoring Ideas:

(Other than email alerts when tasks fail)

Who is online currently?  Can I reboot the server now?

Dag,

Thanks for your comments and questions.

Your last comment on "Who is online currently? Can I reboot the server now?" is a popular one - something that I occasionally ask myself about my test environments. I'm looking forward to getting answers to those questions straight from the QMC someday!

I Agree one very useful info is:

For quarantined tokens, when will they be released for use again? Qlikview by default show this info after removing a CAL in the QMC.

Tyler twa

I recently ran into a problem where we ran out of licenses and I've spent some time creating some community sheets in the License Monitor App.  Now I have a greater appreciation for the base sheets and what they display.

  • Could we have a field 'Past 28 Days' which would be an easy filter?
  • There are some master items I noticed which have an invalid field name, AccessType.  The correct one is [Access Type].

Check out what I created...

Thanks Dag for the input and specific examples!

Some follow-up from your post:

  1. For the 28-day filter - do you mean just simple field which filters date to the last 28 days? Or is there something more?
  2. twa: Fix the master item [Access Type] -- others?
  3. twa: Add the "Tokens used" to the Login Access by User table
  4. I'm not sure I follow the logic on the "Active Login passes exist on this timeline" bar chart. Is what you really want to show 28-day accumulated login access passes used (like a rolling 28-day sum)?
  5. The "Usage History (both User and Login)" chart exists already on the Summary page. Is it lacking in its current implementation? (for example - you'd like to see it just by date rather than a time drill?)
  6. twa: Make a bar chart of license usage by app
  7. The User Activity Log chart w/ ProxySessionId (nice work - can tell you've read some documentation) - this could be useful auditing but not likely a common default view for the app.

As always, I can't say when (or if) any improvements will be implemented (legal stuff) but this is excellent input for our team as we plan the next development phase for the License Monitor (and Operations Monitor). Thanks!

Hi Tyler

If recently notice big difference between qvw size on the Governance dashboard vs actual size

Dashboard 17,191 MB (approx 17Gb) and actual is 1.2GB which is more then 10 smaller.

Any ideas?

Hi Leonard,

Can you give a little more info on what you are seeing?  It seems as though you are having issues in Governance Dashboard relating to the size of the GovDB app, is this correct?  Can you please let me know which version you are running with and perhaps provide a screen capture of the conflicting size totals you are seeing.

thanks,

Evan

Hi Leonard,

I suspected this might be your issue.  There was a bug found very recently around the logic in the complexity table.  It has been fixed and there should be an updated app available to download soon. For now I would ignore the data you see in that particular table until you can run with the new fix.

Thanks,

Evan
