Republishing without reloading ignores script changes when the reload task runs

I have a user that can't reload an app because we haven't granted rights to all the needed data connections.  She added a calculated field to the script and republished it, but after the reload task finished there was no sign of the new field.  What 's the processing logic behind this?   Does qlik keep a history of script versions for an app and only run the last version that successfully loaded (within the editor)?

FYI - I'm not trying to satisfy a particular security requirement. Rather, I need to understand whether we can publish simple script changes without reloading data from operational data sources which are sensitive to costly queries during business hours.
