This is based upon suggestion discussed with a customer, and more ....
This now you can search any object in the assets panel. But it might be helpful to introduce a "grouping" capability in the panel. Many Windows apps e.g. Outlook allow the user to select their desired data grouping e.g. subject, date, etc etc.
If the Qlik Assets Panel had a similar option it would allow for example the ever-growing native chart list to be optionally grouped by say category so that histograms, distribution charts, bullets, etc are listed together.
This is effectively already done in "Custom objects" where different extension bundles are grouped.
Similarly for Master Items, yes you can search but if you have tagged them it would be nice to see an optional grouped display and avoid having to use the search.
You can click on a chart type and see the quick summary description - what it doesn't do is mention alternatives - in that space ? That same popup help could be extended to indicate possible #dimensions, #measures before the user goes through the "pain" of exploring the object for suitability.
Finally, I think it would be helpful for the app designer to be allowed to control which chart types are available in an app, e.g. restrict access to certain ones before publishing the app for self-service.
