Digital Support

Latest update as of Feb. 15, 2022. All current threats have been addressed.

Further updates will be made as new information becomes available.

Qlik has been diligently reviewing and testing our product suite since we’ve become aware of the Apache Log4j vulnerability mid-December.  We want to ensure Qlik users that your security is our upmost priority. We have addressed multiple vulnerabilities through a series of product patches for supported affected versions and we recommend you update to the most recent releases available, shown in the chart below.

Log4j versions before v2.16 presented the highest threat and all exposed Qlik products have provided patches with at least v2.16 and will all be updated to v2.17.1 or later under the regular release schedule as we are not vulnerable to the CVEs related to 2.17.0

We’d like to direct you to our FAQ document to review should you have any further questions, and we encourage you to comment with any additional questions.

@Jhchengus , sorry about that, I couldn't reply earlier. There is no specific command to verify the change, but Qlik has tested these changes and confirmed they mitigate the vulnerability.

There are new updates on this issue stating "LOG4J_FORMAT_MSG_NO_LOOKUPS=true as a mitigation for CVE-2021-44228:
While this does help, an app *MAY* still be vulnerable, depending on how it uses log4j."

Can Qlik confirm if that's the case with Replicate V7 and if they're planning to release the patch or another temp fix to resolve this completely?

The latest from Apache that one of the mitigation steps (setting of JVM parameter "‐Dlog4j2.formatMsgNoLookups=True”) is now discredited.  https://logging.apache.org/log4j/2.x/security.html.

Please provide alternative solution

Here is a proposed fix for CVE-2021-45046

Please note that those are no official fixes from Qlik so use at your own risk. Maybe someone from the Qlik Support Team can confirm that the class removal does not affect any functions.

Affected Jars I found so far are

Replicate: $REPLICATE_HOME/endpoint_srv/externals

log4j-core-2.11.1.jar

Proposed fix (not yet confirmed by Qlik) is to delete the JndiLookup Class from the Jar. Shutdown Replicate before doing that:

zip -q -d log4j-core-*.jar org/apache/logging/log4j/core/lookup/JndiLookup.class

Enterprise Manager:

%ENTERPRISE_MANAGER_HOME%\Enterprise Manager\java\external

log4j-core-2.11.1.jar

Proposed fix (not yet confirmed by Qlik) is to delete the JndiLookup Class from the Jar. Shutdown Enterprise Manager before doing that.

You can delete the class org/apache/logging/log4j/core/lookup/JndiLookup.class by using a e.g. a zip file manager like 7-zip.

@LHes thanks for sharing. This is something what Apache recommended but I would not  recommend using this mitigation until Qlik confirm that they are not using JNDI lookups otherwise you are risking system stability.

@MarcinB  you are absolutely right. It is just a proposed fix for Replicate and Enterprise Manager and I hope that Qlik can confirm it. You should definitely wait until then before deploying it to production.

I have tested it in a dev environment and for now everything seems to be okay. But of course I have not tested it with every connector, especially not the ones relying on Java.

Even if you test it I would suggest you backup the mentioned jars before deleting the classes so you can revert the fix.

@LHes  - awesome that solution seems to work well on dev. I have also docker image build waiting on standby.

@Qlik you mitigation measures should also include Dockerfile.

Hi everyone, as noted in the post, the mitigation steps have been provided as a temporary measure. Qlik will be releasing patches and I'll update the post as soon as I have more information.

@amitarusi , according to the product lifecycle page, that build is past end of support. Qlik is focused on evaluating, mitigating, and patching supported product versions.
