This week the Academic Program has delivered workshops in the UK at both Reading and Birmingham City University. At Reading, Mark James (from our Pre-Sales team) and I were visiting Henley Business School where we gave a session to MSc Information Management students in their Big Data in Business module. Following on from Keiichi Nakata's lecture on Big Data Visualisation, we introduced students to creating visualisations within Qlik. Here we demonstrated the value that can quickly be derived when you have freedom to explore your data from any angle. At Birmingham City University Julie Main (also from our great UK Pre-sales team!) and I headed to the Computer Science department and ran a workshop for the Enterprise Systems Management Masters students. We got them hands on with Qlik and discussed the importance of being able to easily communicate key findings from their data across an organisation, to promote data informed decision making.Taking these two sessions as examples, it's clear to see that students from both business subject areas as well as more technical Computer Science courses can benefit from the Academic Program. In fact, our free software and training resources are available to students and academics at accredited Universities globally, regardless of their subject area. Our aim is to improve the data literacy and employability of all students. If you are interested to learn more about exactly what the free Qlik Academic Program has to offer, please register for our upcoming webinar on Thursday 13th February at 11am GMT. You can sign up for the Webexhere(password = Qlik123).As well as giving full details of what the program offers along with an introduction to Qlik, I will also be revealing more details about our exciting Climate Change Datathon which is about to kick off. Any Academic Program students can get involved to be in for the chance to win some great prizes. Tune in on Thursday to hear more!

The “Data Science and Analytics Innovation Summit” organized by Sinhgad Institute of Management ( SIOM) Pune on 22-23 January, concluded with a massive response showcasing research papers, talks, projects in analytics, AI, machine learning etc. This event was attended by over 100 participants including Professors and students from diverse backgrounds such as Engineering, Management, Social Sciences etc.
Speakers from the academic community presented on topics such as Data Science and BI, Science on Computer Vision, Data Science and paradigm shift in education etc.
I had the opportunity and privilege to be invited as the Keynote Speaker for this event and chose to speak on “3rd Generation BI”. Some of the key points included in my talk were as follows:
The first generation BI was a centralized approach which involved complex tech stacks that analysed multi dimensional data sets often managed by the IT dept and the focus was usually on structured data stored in traditional systems of record
The second generation BI eliminated the technical stack, added user friendly methods of preparing and loading data and developed intuitive, visual ways for users to interact with data. This initiative was led by Qlik with the introduction of Qliview
The third generation BI is a radically democratic approach that spreads analytics to every corner of the organization and it is happening right now. Businesses need to achieve data driven digital transformation in order to lead the way in their industries. The Data Literacy mission of Qlik is further leading this cause to make analytics a fundamental skill for everyone.
The Qlik Academic Program is a step in this direction by empowering students and Professors skills in data analytics through its free resources such as online training, qualifications, analytics curriculum etc. These resources are being leveraged by more than 1600 Universities in more than 85 countries
The way forward between SIOM and the Qlik Academic Program is to have students and Professors benefit from the program resources and get qualified and certified. This would also help build an ecosystem for Qlik Partners and customers in Pune who feel the need for skilled Qlik resources
TheAcademic Programprovides qualified university professors and students, and researchers with free Qlik Sense and resources to educate and train the next generation of experts leading with data.

It’s official! In a recent Forbes article covering the 10 most important job skills employees need in 2020, data literacy came top of the list. Author Bernard Marr discusses how the 4th industrial revolution is bringing about change to the skills and experience required of the modern workforce.Perhaps taking inspiration from the 2017 Economist report “The world’s most valuable resource is no longer oil, but data,” Marr highlights that organisations who do not harness the power of their data will fall behind. “…to make data valuable, organizations must employ individuals who havedata literacyand the skills to turn the data into business value.”In addition to data literacy being the number one skill, critical thinking and complex decision making also feature in the list. The abilities to objectively evaluate the credibility of information, and to take findings from data whilst simultaneously considering how decisions can impact the people in an organisation are key to success. You can check out the complete list in the full article here: https://www.forbes.com/sites/bernardmarr/2019/10/28/the-10-most-important-job-skills-every-company-will-be-looking-for-in-2020/#1a7b251867b6At Qlik, the importance of Data Literacy has long been recognised, and that’s why our Data Literacy courses and certifications are free for everyone to access. The Data Analytics Students Club at Anurag Group of Institutions in Hyderabad, India was launched in May 2019 with a mission to equip students with the right analytics skills and tools to help them succeed in their career. In pursuit of this goal, the Club provides hands-on experience in analytics through learning, events, program simulations and guest lectures. Qlik Sense is among other analytics technologies offered in this Club with a goal to train students as Data Scientists. The club is open for students who are interested in the field of data analytics and encourages students to use analytical skills to solve real world problems. Presently, 60 students are being trained under this club.
The Data Analytics Students Club’s first initiative was to enable students helping them complete the Qlik Sense Business Analyst Qualification offered by the Qlik Academic Program. According to the President of the Club, Shashidhar Reddy, “The Qlik Continuous Classrooms has the best resources for students of all levels. Qlik happens to be one of the most useful tools in data analytics and has motivated us to initiate a Data Analytics Student Club in the Department with a team of 7 members”
Shashidhar embarked on a project called “NYC Restaurant Inspection Application” and developed applications using Qlik Sense. He analyzed various parameters for restaurant inspection including quality, hygiene etc. which threw up some interesting insights.
AGI has been quite supportive of this Club and a separate Data Analytics lab has been dedicated with 32 computers, a network facility to learn data analytics related technologies, an exclusive space to discuss activities of the club. The college has also agreed to host meet-ups inside the college premises which are also open to students from other colleges in Hyderabad

It’s been a busy year for the Qlik Academic Program. Now with a presence in more than 85 countries and with over 1600 Universities involved across the lifetime of the program; we are reaching more and more students to help them on their data journeys, and helping them to secure the jobs that they want. With 2019 coming to a close, we thought that it was a great opportunity to look back at everything that we’ve achieved and to review our highlights:During the first half of the year the team worked on developing a brand new “professor toolkit.” After receiving feedback from some of our professors that the volume and range of resources available could be a little overwhelming, we decided to put a comprehensive guide together. In the document our professors can find an overview of everything that’s on offer, from accessing the software to demo applications and even an example syllabus. We hope that this will make integrating our resources into the classroom easier and even more effective. In September we held our first ever Academic Program webinar. This was intended to give new students and professors some guidance through what the program involves, a brief introduction to the software and the opportunity to ask any questions. We have held 3 webinars to date and the response has been overwhelming, with 157 registrants for one session and 42 attendees for another. This shows that there is a strong interest in the program and great potential for us to continue to grow in size. You can find the webinars that we have scheduled for 2020 on the QCC Calendar. Finally, in line with Qlik’s wider transition to becoming a SaaS first company, the Academic Program has now upgraded its software offering to Qlik Sense Business. This provides our members with a total storage size of 250GB as well as the option to create up to 5 shared spaces where they can assign an unlimited number of users. This allows for easy collaborative work and sharing of apps for assessment by professors. With all these strides that we have made this year, we are looking forward to an even more successful 2020 where we can improve data literacy and employability amongst more students across the globe. If you are a University student or professor and you are not a member of the program yet, you can sign up here: qlik.com/academicprogramMerry Christmas from all of the Academic Program team, and we wish you a Happy New Year!
