Upgrading only Qlikview Desktop Client and not the Server?

Hi ,

We are using QV11.0 version as both our client and server. Has anyone tried to upgrade the client only (not the server) to Version 11 SR5 ( Latest Release) and check if there are any issues in Desktop Client as well as Access Point while accessing using AJAX?

Currently, my customer has upgraded their laptops to have the Internet Explorer 10 browser only. I see issues with my Apps in the AJAX client in the Access point using this browser. There were no issues while we were using IE8.

My limited knowledge allows me to think that Qlikview Client itself is immensely powerful and the Server has to do everything on licensing, running services etc. I want to know if anyone has such an experience on only upgrading a client and not the server & what are the consequences.

Any experience sharing would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Tutan

Hi Tutan,

The latest release, at present, is QlikView 11.2 SR5.

You should not have any problems upgrading just the Desktop versions of QlikVIew and leaving the server how it is.  Where you may hit problems is if you are using Direct Query - as this has changed a bit in recent versions.

I would question why you would not look to upgrade the server though - each of the service releases has brought in bug fixes and enhancements - compatibility with Windows 8 and newer versions of IE being among them.

With different versions on Desktop and Server you are also more likely to have differences between what you see on Desktop when you are developing and what users see when they connect to the document via Access Point.  That said though I have in the past developed documents on versions of QlikView far removed from the Server version without issue.

Hi,

It is always recommend using the same version in the desktop and the server, you will have less things to preocupate and you have a better functionality  and less conection problems.

Hi Steve,

I appreciate your response. The only reason for this questions is, I don't have time to upgrade the server immediately ( as it would involve time for testing , backup etc) & just want to make sure that the SR5 desktop client installation would suffice to help releasing my App in Prod without any issues in IE10 for the time being. Once it's stable , would upgrade the server in coming weeks.

Thanks,

In which case I would go for it - but as Fernando says it is a good idea to get the versions back in step when you can.

If you want to fix the issues the customer has with a too-new-browser, upgrade the server and not the desktop. The server provides support for IE10, your application doesn't.

Also once you start using new or fixed features in your new desktop, the server may have trouble displaying them in an predictable way.

Offhand what has changed with direct query? Wasn't it called direct discovery?
