My first question would be: "which date?"

You can set a calculation condition in general tab of chart properties, where you can check your date.

Here, your date should return an unambiguous answer in global context when compared to today().

You can set / change the displayed error message by modifying the corresponding message in the error messages dialog (accessible from general tab of chart properties).
