Master calendar will helps,instituted of creating multiple expression by day.month,week....month name,weekday..like many date dimensions.
u can create all those above date dimension in master calendar with in script,that helps many ways..most of the cases from the source we won't get all those fields above mentioned by creating master calender this way it helps and no need to create again & again multiple set-expression on front-end this way it helps and if we are creating multiple expressions from front end that helps loading performance both the side(server side and end user side)..like some more.
The master calender has lot of purpose with it, few are stated below:
* To build your own custom dates .
*In the normal fact table you may not have all the set of dates for a particular month and if you want on do the day to day analysis this will be helpful.
*Every organization have a different finical year and their month for finical start would be different, using master calender you can handle it better.

Mostly is a matter of not having "empty dates". Say you didn't do sales the first of september, when you are going to filter, the date 01/09 won't be there, and that looks bad.
The other part is for the divisions the company may use, such as quarter, financial year, season... Those are not always common with other companies
